Key Events
Street Parties:
The Spanish certainly know how to party and the street parties of the Haro wine festival definitely are no exception. Celebrations last all weekend in the lead up to the big event on the 28th June, the streets fill up with tourists and locals alike whilst the music, dance performance and general buzzing atmosphere ensure that everyone has a brilliant time. The general easy going vibe of the festivities means that befriending another reveller is quite possible to. So if you are down for one endless party, lasting memories and potentially having 1 or 2 more friends than before than the street parties of the Haro wine festival will definitely be your kind of thing.
The Wine Fight:
After the night long celebrations and only a couple hours of sleep or no sleep at all the entire town sets of on an entertaining 5km walk. You say walking is not your thing? Well trust us when we say “it will be well worth it” and it is guaranteed to be a good laugh too.
So where does this 5km walk take you? It takes you through the Mountains of Bilibio, all the way to a small chapel of San Felices where a short mass takes place to honour St Peter. Which actually marks the start of all the fun. As the mass comes to an end the first signs of excitement start to show and rightly so, as this is the biggest party the town sees all year. From buckets and water pistols to other unexpected sparing devices the masses have their chosen weapons ready as they queue at the wine trucks to get their supply of wine. Once the water pistols are filled and buckets loaded, the craziness really begins and does not end for some time until everyone is drenched in red wine and ready to be rung out. Two things you will find plenty of at the Hora wine festival are fun and a sense of humour, which for us are definitely the indication of a brilliantly good time.
So grab yourself a bottle of wine, smile, perfect your wine battle skills, get hold of an Interrail Pass and make Hora a stop during your Interrail adventure this June.
