Portugal Railway Information

Trains in Portugal are operated by Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (CP), the Portuguese National Railways.

Train Service:

Domestic connections:

There are a number of different types of trains that make up to Portuguese railway network, these are:

  • Intercity trains (IC): These trains cover the route from Lisbon to Porto-Guimaraes/ Guarda/ Covilha/ Faro/ Beja/Évora
  • Regional and inter-regional trains: These trains are for short distances within the country
  • Suburban trains: These operate in the cities of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra
  • ALFA Pendular trains: These are trains which stop in the main cities of Portuga which include  ​​​Lisbon,  Porto, Braga and Faro.
  • Sud Express : These trains operate between Lisbon and Hendaye

Note: There is no longer a train connection between Beja and Funcheira in Portugal.

High-speed trains: 

On the high-speed (rápido) trains,1st class is called Conforto and 2nd class is called Turística. Local and suburban trains do not have class distinction

International train connections:

There are various international connections from Portugal, but the most popular are:

Lusitânia Hotel Train: This train connects Lisbon, the capital of Portugal to Madrid, the capital city of Spain. 

TGV Trains: These trains provide connections to Paris, the capital city of France.

ALFA Pendular trains: 

These trains have a number facilities including:

  • A buffet car
  • Mini bar
  • Audio
  • Video channels (ear-phones are distributed)
  • Nappy changing facilities
  • Toilets
  • Special places reserved for reduced mobility passengers.

IC trains: These trains also offer a buffet bar service

Bikes on trains:

You will able to take your bike on most trains once you have bought a special bike ticket. Before boarding a train, ask the ticket inspector if space is available for your bike
