German Black Forest Wonders
A wonderful German winter...
Germany’s black forest region is definitely worth seeing by train no matter what time of year, but a scenic winter train journey through this part of Germany certainly is even more magical. Once you have arrived in Germany catch a train to Freiburg, the historic capital of the Black forest and the point where your epic winter Interrail adventure begins. Enjoy the medieval atmosphere and wealth of history in Freiburg before you continue to Donaueschingen on the Höllentalbahn which translates into “Hell valley railway”. Prepare to be taken to heights of up to 2,000 feet on one of the steepest and most stunning railways in Germany and discover for yourself if this Black Forest railway line lives up to its name. But that is not all that is on offer on a journey on the Höllentalbahn, some of the black forests most impressive natural wonders including the Ravenna gorge and the mountain lake around Titisee amongst many more are waiting to be explored.
From Donaueschingen the Black Forest route (Schwarzwaldbahn) takes you further north towards Sommerau. Shortly after you have made it past Sommerau comes one of the best parts of this Interrail trip. The train ascends and descends various mountains and makes its way across various line loops to give you magnificent views of the natural beauty of the Black Forest. Enjoy astonishing views of valleys, mountains and waterfalls before you get to the end of this Black Forest railway line.
It may be the end of the line, but the wonderful viaduct crossing over the roofs of the delightful town of Hornberg and your arrival at Offenburg a while later, certainly mark the end of a trip through the Black Forest that you will not forget.
The end of the line certainly does not need to be the end of your winter Interrail adventure though. Because various famous German Christmas Markets are only a train journey away and are waiting to be explored by you.
