Norwegian Winter Fun
The Bergen Railway - an amazing piece of nature...
A journey on the Bergen railway is undoubtedly the perfect winter Interrail trip. As it makes its way from Bergen to Oslo, you are given the chance to enjoy so most spectacular scenery to the fullest. Some would even go all out and say its one of the most beautiful train rides you will ever get to experience and we can actually understand why. During your 310 mile journey on northern Europe's highest mainline railway, you will make your way through some of the continents most tranquil and mesmerising mountain terrain with no real sign of human life. Enjoy the beauty and calm of Norway's winter, as you travel from snow-covered mountain tops, past deep fjords and from frozen lakes to grassy plains.
But its not only the route of the Bergen railway that impresses, its history is worth mentioning too. Known to be one of the most difficult railways to build, it was finally constructed after 12 potential routes were surveyed and the route that exists today was picked. Its build started in 1883 and took until 1908 to complete, as the line had to be put together piece by piece due to its complex nature.
So you could say that a trip on Norway's Bergen Railway line spans across history and a piece of magnificent nature too. Two reasons which we feel are more than good enough to ensure you include an Interrail trip on the Bergen Railway on your festive holiday list this winter. But if that's not enough then the fact that with your Interrail Pass the entire journey on this line is free, is a plus point too we like to think.
