Keeping in line with the spirit of Interrail, travel by train in Italy and experience the "dolce vita"! you can just hop on and off most of the local and regional trains.
But to give you piece of mind, we recommend that you make sure you understand everything there is to know about seat reservations and supplements on trains in Italy before you travel.
Reservations are required for:
We would recommend reservations, if you are intending to use any of the following trains in Italy:

EuroNight (EC) night trains: Reservations are required for these night trains which cover medium and long-distance journeys.

High-Speed Trains: Reservations are required for EuroCity (EC) and InterCity (IC) domestic premium high-speed trains which connect larger Italian cities.
Reservations are not required for:
The following trains in Italy do not need you to make a reservation:
- Regional (R) & Express (E): It is possible but not compulsory to make reservations on these trains that connect main destinations inside and outside Italy.
- InerCity Notte (ICN): Reservations are not required on these slower regional trains.
